Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri confirmed today that Nokia smartphones will be coming back in 2016.
As you all know, Nokia sold its Smartphone Mobile division to Microsoft last year in a deal that saw Nokia unable to make Nokia branded phones till 2016.
Well, we are 6 months from 2016 and Nokia CEO confirmed that Nokia phones will be coming back but it's not what you think...
Microsoft bought everything related to manufacturing those quality built Nokia phones you love. right now Nokia doesn't even have a factory for producing phones, even the bright minds that designed and made those phones are all at Microsoft now.

So what Nokia is going to do is similar to what they did with the Nokia N1 Android tablet they released last year. They will design the hardware and license it to hardware manufacturers to produce and use the Nokia branding on these designs. In essence, Nokia will be selling its brand name to whichever smartphone manufacturer/OEM that they deemed good enough to produce great hardware.
So while we will see Nokia branded devices next year they are just phones that got lucky enough to carry the Nokia brand.
In the interview, Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri said
"We will look for suitable partners, Microsoft makes mobile phones. We would simply design them and then make the brand name available to license."
Even Microsoft can produce Nokia branded phones again.
So are you excited about this news?
Will the Nokia brand still be relevant? Will it still be a force to reckon with?
