How to change your Lumia device Bluetooth name.

This past summer, I made sure almost everyone in my family uses a Lumia phone, any Lumia phone. So when we were all together for the first time in a while, I tried to transfer a photo via bluetooth and had my sisters turn on their bluetooth only to discover that by default, the bluetooth name on Lumia devices is... wait for it "Windows Phone". So I am sitting there staring at my screen, clueless as to which Lumia was which!
The next logical step was to change bluetooth name of the device and another shocker.. YOU CANNOT CHANGE YOUR BLUETOOTH NAME ON A LUMIA  FROM THE LUMIA ITSELF!!! WOW.
Yes, you heard me right, something as basic as changing bluetooth name, you have to own a PC or at least borrow one, because that's the ONLY way to do it.
Makes me want to write an article on why the hell did Nokia drop Symbian again??
Anyway, I just put together a quick guide on how to change it and of course you will need a PC.

  •  Connect your Lumia to a PC
  • Go to My Computer
  • Right click on the Windows Phone
  • Select "Rename" from the pop-up menu
  • Enter your desired bluetooth name

Hopefully, this quick guide becomes obsolete as a result of the Windows Phone Team fixing this glaring omission.

In other bluetooth related news...

Nokia has announced that Bluetooth LE will be coming to all WP8 devices in the next Lumia Black update.

What is Bluetooth LE?

Bluetooth LE allows you to connect your phone with special accessories like heart rate monitors. While doing that, thanks to Bluetooth LE connection, the accessory battery will last much longer, up to months.
It is already available for 520, 620, 625, and 720 with Amber. With Lumia Black software update, Bluetooth LE will be enabled across the full WP8 Lumia range.
