Viber is a cross-platform IM, VoIP service that allows you to make free voice calls and IM with other contacts who are members of Viber.
the only thing stopping this service from being identical to Skype is that it doesn't support Video calls...yet!
One unique feature of Viber is its special emoticons called "Stickers" and while it has been available on iOS and Android, it finally made it's way to Windows Phone.
|viber now supports stickers. Yay!!|
Another new feature.. You can now share photos directly from your photo gallery. Neat!
Here is a full list of updated features:
- Support for the all new Viber Desktop - on Windows and Mac OS! - Free calls with HD sound quality - Free text and photo messaging - Send stickers and emoticons, making messaging fun! - Share photos on Viber directly from your device’s photo gallery - Connect with your friends in group conversations of up to 40 participants - Share your location in messages - Live Tiles - Pin conversations to your home screen - Lock screen notifications
Viber is fairly new to the game of VoIP, but has gained prominence over time, I have had the pleasure of using it on both Android and Windows Phone, both are buggy to say the least. But I am concerned with it's WP version here.
It doesn't push notifications and you cannot rely on Viber as your source for receiving phone calls, why? Because your phone just never rings, all you get is a missed call notification a minute later and regrettably this hasn't been fixed with the new update.
The only way you can receive a call is if you are actually in the app at the time (God! This reminds me of Skype on my Lumia 900 more than a year ago).
I think it's time to ask the guys at Skype how to fix this?
If you have the Viber app on your PC and while on a call, there is a neat feature that allows you to transfer the call to your mobile device, but this doesn't work with windows phone, I tried on my Lumia and no call, in face the only way this gets successfully transferred is if you have the Viber app opened... SMH
The app runs hot and drains battery quite significantly on my Lumia 920 (I am yet to confirm if this was also fixed with this new update), though I have made a few calls and engaged in conversations and I did notice some improvements.
Overall, nice update, a step in the right direction, there is still more work to be done however.
I know Viber listens to its WP users, after all, they brought the one feature its users requested for but not the one we need right now.
You can enjoy the improved Viber App for Windows Phone...
